Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that has a wide variety of functions in the body, and is sometimes called the ‘happy’ chemical. The scientific name for serotonin is 5-hydroxytryptamine, or 5-HT. It is mainly found in the brain, bowels, and blood.


5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) is the precursor to serotonin. 5-HTP is not usually sourced from the diet, but is made by the body from the amino acid tryptophan, where it is then changed into serotonin. Several factors such as occasional stress can reduce tryptophan conversion into serotonin in the body, while 5-HTP can bypass several of these factors Serotonin is what helps to control our mood, sleeping patterns and appetite, among other functions.
